Position Description:
o During an initial assessment period, function as Assistant Crew Leader to observe and learn the intricacies of the role.
o Once initial assessment period is successfully completed, will lead a 3-person field crew that collects fish assemblage and water quality data in rivers and streams primarily in the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeastern Regions of the U.S. Conducts site evaluations, manages data, and maintains field equipment. Responsible for following U.S. EPA and State methods and quality assurance practices and following plans of study. Safely and effectively operate electrofishing equipment, water quality monitoring equipment, 4WD trucks, boats, and outboard motors.
o Write watershed biological and water quality assessment reports following established MBI formats.
o Support research on local watershed, river-reach, and regional datasets involving biological, physical, chemical, and GIS data on river drainages and stream watersheds. Utilize programs cush as R, GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, and diverse datasets including StreamCat, and develop river and stream basin/watershed maps. Support the analysis of complex relationships between biological and chemical/physical variables is desirable.
o Employment with MBI is “at will.”
Qualifications:
o Able to identify fish to species level in each survey area is required.
o Able to work independently, with strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, able to effectively supervise field personnel and maintain a positive team environment.
o Has a minimum of 2 years of experience in a closely related field including under-graduate and/ or graduate level research.
o Have knowledge of and/or experience with rivers and streams, boating, canoeing, navigation, and water safety in general.
o Able to maintain a variable work schedule, including irregular hours and extended overnight travel and weekends primarily during a summer-early fall field season.
o Able to safely operate electrofishing equipment, 4WD trucks, boats, and outboard motors, oversee equipment care and the proper handling and use, including hydrologic and water quality equipment.
o Either has or will pursue Level 3 Qualified Data Collector status under Ohio Credible Data Program law and regulations (for lead fish taxonomist credentials) within the first two years of employment.
- Experience with with R, ArcGIS Pro, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
o Able to organize and complete multiple and varied work tasks within specified time frames.
o Knowledge and experience with data analysis skills.
o Able to lift 50lbs.
o Able to ensure safe practices.
o Become familiar with the Ohio Water Quality Standards in terms of technical content and administrative rule processes.
o Able to carry out sampling and data collection in accordance with specified methods and a detailed study plan.
Compensation and Benefits:
Starting pay range is $24-$30/hr. commensurate with work/research experience and Level 3 QDC status.
